Perumbakkam Sri VenkataVaradaraja Perumal Temple

Hello, Namaskaram. Presenting below my blog on "Sri Venkata Varadaraja Perumal Temple" which is located in a village named "Perumbakkam" which is about  7 Kms from Villupuram on Villupuram - Thirukoilur highway (via Mambalapattu) in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is the native place of my mother.

Read on to know more about the temples!!!

Sthala Purana

It is an ancient temple built almost 800 years ago. According to Sthala Purana, Lord Varadaraja is believed to have appeared in the dream of a Vaishnavaite and a Vedic Scholar living in Perumbakam. The Lord ordained him to fetch the idols buried in the land called "Thoramaniam" and build a temple for him and his consorts. Following this divine instruction, the land was excavated and the idols of "Sri Venkata VaradarajanSri Sridevi and Sri Bhoodevi " were found .

According to the inscriptions found in the temple, it was built during Pallava period according to the "Agama Sashtra".

Note:
The Agamas are a collection of scriptures of several Hindu devotional schools. The term literally means tradition or "that which has come down", and the Agama texts describe cosmology, epistemology, philosophical doctrines, precepts on meditation and practices, four kinds of yoga, mantras, temple construction, deity worship and ways to attain sixfold desires.

The temple rituals are performed as per "Sri Vaikhanasa Bhagavath Sasthram i.e. Sri Vaikhanasa Agamam". Currently the temple poojas are performed by Sri K.Sridharan Bhattachariar."

Note:
"Vaikhanasa Agama" is a specific type of secondary scriptures in Hinduism, and it is a sub-category of spiritual and scriptural texts known as the Agamas. They give great detail about the process of image-worship and temple rituals, as well as certain aspects of temple architecture. As a whole, the Agamas contain information on rituals and wider temple culture and are divided into three main branches:1)"Saiva Agama" , 2)"Sakta Agama", 3)"Vaisnava Agama".It is this final branch, the "Vaisnava Agama," which are split into two traditions - the "Pancharatra Agama" and the "Vaikhanasa Agama."
"Vaikhanasa Agama" takes its name from its founder, the sage Vikhanas.

Temple Rajagopuram

The Temple Rajagopuram was recently constructed and the "Maha Samprokshanam (Kumbhabhishekam)" was performed auspiciously on 7th July 2014.

Dwajasthambam

As in all Hindu temples, as soon as we enter the temple we have the "Dwajasthambam".

Dwajasthambam

So why do we have a Dwajasthambam in all the temples???
It is a tall post-like structure, which is referred to as the flag-mast of the deity of the temple. During festivities, the Dhwaja Stambha is decorated with different types of flags to commemorate and celebrate that particular event. The Dhwaja Stambha is present in a straight line from the deity, just before the Vahana of the deity, which is also in the same axial line.It is referred to as being a medium for the Heavens to be connected to the earth, which would refer to it being a spiritual connector between us earthlings and the supreme being, the God, above. From a scientific point of view, the Dhawajastambha is basically an ancient lightning arrestor. Whenever lightning strikes, the metal arrestor, is placed such that it is the highest point of the region which induces the charge to conduct through it. The arrestor then conducts the heavy electrical impulse directly to ground, thus preventing the building from getting damaged.

Sri VenkataVaradaraja Perumal Sannadhi

As the main deity of this temple has both ‘Katika Hastham,' as in the case of Lord Venkateswara and ‘Abhaya Hastham,' as in the case of the deity in Kanchipuram, he came to be known as Sri Venkata Varadaraja Perumal.  Since presiding deity carries a ‘Vakshasthala Pratima' of Nrusimhar (an image of the face of Lord Nrusimha) on the chest, Perumbakkam has, therefore, been known as "Dakshina Ahobilam". So if one has a darshan of "Sri VenkataVaradaraja Perumal, it amounts to having the Darshan of Lord Thiruvenkatan of Thirumala, Lord Sri Varadaraja Perumal of Kancheepuram and Lord Sri Nrusimha of Ahobilam at the same time.

The utsava murthy, in addition to the traditional Sudarsana chakram and Sankham, has Sarangam, the bow. Garuda here, stands with open wings mentioned as another special feature. The sthala viruksham of this temple is "Vilvam".

Sri Perundevi Thayar Sannadhi

The name of the Thayar here is "Sri Perundevi Thayar". Both moolavar and utsavar deities of Thayar are here.

Sri Thayar Sannadhi

Sri Perundevi Thayar

A "Laali" song on some of the Divya Desam thayar along with Perundevi Thayar
Let us have a darshan of  other deities in the temple!!

Note:
This song was written and composed by "unknown". I just added the lyrics for Perumbakkam Sri Perundevi Thayar towards the end of the song. Photos except Perumbakkam thayar photo were taken from google.

Outside the moolavar sannadhi of the Perumal, there are deities of Sri Venkatan with his consorts(Moolavar), Sri Lakshmi Narayanan, Sri Pattabhiraman, Sri Lakshmi Hayagreevar . Also there is a separate sannadhi for Sri Lakshmi Nrusimhan (Moolavar and Utsavar) and
Sri Lakshmi Varahan .

Sri Lakshmi Hayagreevar:

Sri Lakshmi Hayagreevar

A few insights on Lord Sri Lakshmi Hayagreeva
In Hinduism, Lord Hayagriva is an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Hayagriva is sometimes worshiped in a solitary pose of meditation. This form is known as Yoga-Hayagriva. However, he is most commonly worshipped along with his consort Lakshmi and is known as Lakshmi-Hayagriva. His blessings are sought when beginning study of both sacred and secular subjects. He is worshipped as the god of knowledge and wisdom. He has a human body with a horse's head, brilliant white in color, with white garments and is seated on a white lotus. He is also hailed as "Hayasirsa". Hayaśirṣa means haya=Horse, śirṣa=Head.

Sri Lakshmi Varahan:

Sri Lakshmi Varaha

  Who is Lord Lakshmi Varaha??
Varaha is the avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, in the form of a boar.He is most commonly associated with the legend of lifting the Earth (personified as the goddess Bhudevi)out of the cosmic ocean. When the demon Hiranyaksha stole the earth and hid her in the primordial waters,Vishnu appeared as Varaha to rescue her. Varaha slew the demon and retrieved the Earth from the ocean, lifting it on his tusks, and restored Bhudevi to her place in the universe. Varaha may be depicted as completely a boar or in an anthropomorphic form, with a boar's head and human body. His consort, Bhudevi, the earth, is often depicted as a young woman, lifted by Varaha, thus being referred as "Sri Lakshmi Varaha" .

Sri Lakshmi Nrusimhan Sannadhi

Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha

Let us know a few details about " Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha":
Lord Nrusimha is the lion-man avatar of Lord Vishnu with a lion head and a human torso and lower body.He is usually depicted with a fierce look on his face with bulging eyes and four to sixteen hands carrying different weapons, which include mace, discus, con ch, axe, etc. One free hand will always be in Abhaya mudra or blessing posture.Sometimes, he is also depicted seated calmly with his consort Goddess Lakshmi as Lakshmi Nrusimha.
Lord Vishnu had to take this unbelievably strange form, for outwitting a powerful demon known as Hiranyakashipu, who was well protected by a series of boons and for slaying him, to save the world and the people from his tyranny.

Sri Chakarathazhvar and Sri Yoga Nrusimhan Sannadhi

By visiting this temple we can also have a darshan of Sri Chakarathazhvar and Sri Yoga Nrusimhan.

Sri Chakarathazhwar/Sri Yoga Nrusimhan Sannadhi

Do read to know more about Sri Chakarathazhvar and Sri Narasimhar:
In order to relieve the suffering of people in this world, the devotees prayed to Bramha to create a powerful Shakti. So Bramha took up a serious penance for thousands of years resulting in the creation of, one of  Sri Vishnu's Ayudhapurushas, the extremely powerful Sri Sudarshana. Sri Sudarshana represents the cosmic mind and also Vishnu's infinite power to create and destroy the universe. He also represents Sri Vishnu's will to multiply. He will also neutralize all poisons. There are more than one hundred and eight names to Sri Sudarshana. Among them are Sudarshana, Chakraraja , Sahasrabahu to name a few. Prayers to Sri Sudarshana will alleviate serious diseases, avert great dangers and prevent obstacles in any one's effort to succeed.
Narasimha Avatara is the fifth re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu. As Narasimha, he destroyed the demon king Hiranyakashiyapu, the father of Baktha Prahalad.
Sudarshana and Narasimha are one and the same as two faces of a coin. The almighty blesses his devotees as Chakarathazar on the front side and as Sri Yoga Narasimha on the back side. Both deities benefit the entire human kind by their blessings.

Sri Andal Sannadhi

As in all Vaishnava temples,we have a separate Sannadhi for Sri Andal

Sri Andal Sannadhi

Sri Andal

Sri Andal is the only female Alvar among the 12 Alvar saints of South India. The Alvar saints are known for their affiliation to Srivaishnava tradition of Hinduism. Andal is credited with the great Tamil works of Thiruppavai and Nachiar Tirumozhi that are still recited by devotees during the Winter festival season of Margazhi. Andal is known for her unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu, the God of the Srivaishnavas. She was adopted by Alwar saint Periyalvar who found her as a baby lying under a tulasi plant in the temple garden of Srivilliputhur. He  named her 'Kodhai' or "gift of Mother Earth". The Srivilliputhoor Temple is dedicated to her, marking her birthplace.

Sri Kalyana Anjaneyar

The legend goes that if an unmarried person and so also persons who who wants to have child worship "Sri Kalyana Anjaneyar" all obstacles will be removed and they will be blessed. In general many devotees in and around Perumbakkam village, vouch for this divine power of "Sri Kalayana Anjaneyar".

He occupies an important place in Vaikhanasa and Sri Vaishnava temple traditions, where often temple festivals begin with his worship and procession.

Sri Nammazhvar

The idols of Sri Kumuthavalli Nachiar sametha Sri Thirumangai Azhwar are also here. The idols are placed along with the archaryans in the archaryan sannadhi.

A few details on Sri Thirumangai Azhwar :
Sri Thirumangai Azhwar was the youngest and the last of the Azhwars. He was considered the amsa (incarnation) of the divine bow Sarngam of the Lord. His call to spiritual journey and superior bhakti came when he married the divine and most beautiful Kumudavalli Naachiyaar.Sri Thirumangai Azhwar was a very talented poet and he had a large share of verses in the Naalaayiram, with a variety of intricate poetry.

Sri Bhashyakarar (Sri Ramanuja) Sannadhi

Sri Nigamantha Mahadesikan

We have a separate sannadhi for Sri Nigamantha Mahadesikan

 Sri Nigamaantha Mahadesikan Sannadhi

Swami Vedanta Desikan(Thoopul Nigamaantha Desikan) was a Vaishnava Guru.He was a poet, devotee, philosopher and master-teacher.He was the disciple of Swamy Sri Kidambi Appullar alias Sri Aathreya Ramanujachariar who comes in the lineage starting from Sri Ramanuja with Sri Thirukurugai Piran Pillan alias Sri Kurugesar, Sri Kidambi Aachan, Sri Aathreya Ramanujar, Sri Aathreya Rangarajachariar and many in the order. He is considered as an Avatar (incarnation) of the divine bell of Lord Venkateswara of Tirumalai by Sri Vaishavites.
Association of "Sri Ahobila Mutt"

Sri Ahobila Mutt is a Vadakalai Sri Vaishnava religious institution established 600 years ago at Ahobilam in India by Sri Aadhivan Satakopan.

This temple is very close to the Jeers of the Ahobila mutt. Since the time, the 36th Jeeyar of Ahobila Mutt, His Holiness Srinivasa Yathindra Mahadesikan had stayed at Perumbakkam  for a year during 1897-1898 and worshipped Lord Venkata Varadarajan, a close association has been developed between this temple and the Ahobila Mutt.

This close association between the Mutt and Perumbakkam village culminated during the selection of the 37th Peetadhipathi of Sri Ahobila Mutt. When the 36th Jeeyar of Sri Ahobila Mutt passed away suddenly on 27th December 1898 without nominating his successor, the Sadas urged Shri.U.V.Gopalacharya Swamy of Pillaipakkam, an eminent scholar , who was at that time staying in Thiruvallur to be the 37th Jeeyar of the Mutt. He was then declared as the 37th Jeeyar of the Mutt at Perumbakkam.

Following his elevation as Peetathipathi of the Mutt, the 37th Jeeyar proclaimed this village as "Dakshina Ahobilam", as is evident from the records of the Mutt. The 42nd Jeeyar of the Mutt His Holiness Injimeedu Azhagiyasingar reaffirmed this "Perumbakkam Kshetram " as "Dakshina Ahobilam". The 41st,42nd,43rd,44th and 45th Jeeyars also visited this temple and performed Mangalasanams of the deities of the temple.

What is Mangalasasanam ??
The Alvars during the early medieval period of Tamil history (between the 7th and 10th centuries CE) worshipped Lord Vishnu and his avatars through their hymns. This collection of their hymns is known as Divya Prabhandham.Mangalasasanam means "praying that the holy shrines be happy all the time".
Divya Desams refer to the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the works of the Tamil Azhvars (saints). Divya means "premium" and Desam indicates the "place" (temple). Of the 108 temples, 105 are in India, one is in Nepal, and two are supposedly outside the Earthly realms.

Sri Aadhivan Satakopa Yathindra Mahadesikan Sannadhi

As a mark of  reverence to the Mutt, a separate sannadhi with mandapam was built in the temple for Sri Aadhivan Satakopa Yathindra Mahadesikan, the founder and first Jeeyar of Sri Ahobila Mutt. Puratasai Ketai is the birth star of Srimad Aadhivan Satakopa Yathindhra Mahadesikan

This sannadhi was built under the tutelage of my maternal grandfather Sri Anna Varahaswamy Iyengar when he was the trustee of the temple then.

  • Panguni Uthram

Pavithra Utsavam :

Every year Pavithra Utsavam is performed commencing from the evening of Vijaya Dasami till Dwadesi i.e following two days of Vijaya Dasami.

Sri Pavithra Utsavam

Pavithrotsava is derived from the combination of two words Pavithra (holy) and utsava (festival). The main objective of this utsava is to get rid of the evil that might have been caused due to omissions and commissions in the performance of various rituals throughout the year. The festival is also known as Dosha Nivaarana (error correction), Sarva Yajna Phalapradha (the one ritual that equals the holiness of rites all year long), Sarva Doshopasamana (removal of all errors).

Thiruketai Utsavam :

Puratasi Kettai is the Thiru nakshatram of "Sri Adhivan Satakopa Yadhinthra Mahadesikan". "Thirukettai Utsavam" a ten day festival is being celebrated during the Tamil month of Puratasi.

Sri Adhivan Satakopa Yadhinthra Mahadesikan

My mami Dr S.Jayalakshmi has described about this Utsavam through a Tamil poem which could enjoyed by clicking on the link :https://vetrikuzhal.blogspot.com/2019/10/blog-post_4.html

Vaikunta Ekadesi :

"Vaikunta Ekadesi" is celebrated in a grand manner here. What a blissful sight it is to witness all the bhakthas throng outside the entrance to have a glimpse of the Lord
Sri VenkatVaradan as soon as the "Vaikunta Vaasal" or the "Gate to the heavenly abode" opens, as seen in the video below :

                                                       Sri Vaikunta Ekadesi Darshan

Significance of Vaikunta Ekadesi
Vaikunta Ekadashi is a special Ekadashi. The Vaishnava (worshipers of Vishnu) sect believes that ‘Vaikunta Dwaram’ or ‘the gate to the Lord's Inner Sanctum’ is opened on this day. Lord Vishnu opened the gate of Vaikuntham (his abode) for two asuras (demons) in spite of their being against him and also forgave them. They asked for the boon that whoever listens to their story and sees the idol of Lord Vishnu coming out of the door called Vaikunth Dwar, will reach Vaikunth as well. Temples all over India make a door kind of structure on this day for devotees to walk through. It occurs in the Hindu calendar between December and January. When observed, it bestows liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Sahasradeepa Alankaram :

Every year Sahasradeepa Alankaram is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the Tamil month of Karthigai ( mid week of December). Sri Perumal with his consorts will be seated on the oonjal. With vedic chantings on one side, one thousand lamps are lit by the bhakthas inside the temple.

Sri Perumal with his consorts giving oonjal sevai

Panguni Uthram

"Panguni Uthram" is celebrated in a grand manner in this temple. Sri Perumal will go to Sri Thayar Sannadhi on Panguni Uthram dayIn the morning Thirumanjanam will be performed for both Perumal and Thayar in the Thayar sannadhi. This will be followed by Kalyana Utsavam. In the evening both Thayar and Perumal will give Oonjal sevaiSri Perumal will remain in Sri Thayar sannadhi on Panguni Uthram day known as "Serthiarai Sevai ".

This Utsavam has been performed by my maternal side for generations and is being continued by my uncles now which will be followed by the generations to come.

Sri Thayar and Sri Perumal after Thirumanjanam

Sri Thayar and Sri Perumal during Oonjal Sevai

There are many significance related to "Panguni Uthram" as mentioned below

"Panguni Uthram"
This month is special because the Uthiram nakshatram coincides with the full moon. The day is intended to underline the glory of grahasta dharma (or the married life of a householder). The Almighty manifests in the marital state as Uma Maheswara, Sita Rama, and Radha Krishna. The Lord is indeed a Nitya Kalyana Murthi. This day is celebrated in a very grand manner in all Vishnu and Shiva temples.

Kalyana Utsavam:

Kalyana Utsavam of Sri Venkata Vardan and Sri  Perundevi Thayar is celebrated in a grand manner.
The sole purpose of Kalyana utsavam is the protection and prosperity of the world. The word “ut” means grief & “savam” means to remove it hence performing or participating in a celestial wedding of Lord Venkata Varadan removes all difficulties. The name “Kalyanam” itself bestows all sorts of goodness.

Let us witness a blissful sight from one of the Kalyana Utsavam celebrated in the temple where in the Archakas (Bhattacharyas) exchange garlands between the God and the Goddess with their gracious steps, in the video below:

Kalyana Utsavam

Here is a mesmerizing song on "Vasantha Utsavam" performed in the temple, the lyrics of  which are penned by my mami, Dr S.Jayalakshmi and rendered by Vidhwan Shri.(Delhi) Sundararajan ,the link of the same is given here --> https://youtu.be/2Uj8mkWAGcc

Thayar Mahimai in Podhigai TV

Aalaya Dharisanam in Podhigai TV

My maternal uncles are taking initiatives in developing the temple and we wish and pray to the almighty that this lineage should be continued by all generations to come!!

Thanks for reading this blog about "Sri Venkata Varadaraja Perumal " Temple at Perumbakkam. If you are a native of this village and wish to get connected or if you are interested to know about the temple activities, you can contact the persons mentioned under temple contact details section of the blog.

While writing this blog I referred a few online articles that were earlier published in "The Hindu" newspaper and a booklet that was released during the "Maha Samprokshanam (Kumbabhishekam)" held in July 2014. Also consulted my uncles for temple specific rituals.General information has been provided by referring Wikipedia and few other related websites.
